Weather & Politics

Drought VS Dryness

There is sometimes a fine line of demarcation when a weather pattern develops that can be exceedingly worrisome for the market if it continues for an extended time period but changes in sufficient time that it actually has the opposite effect and becomes surprisingly beneficial for production. One example that comes to mind would include a freeze threat for the Florida citrus crop. The FCOJ market climbs a wall of worry as soon as weather forecasts show that the mercury is going to drop and temperatures could plunge below the freezing mark. Futures have sometimes risen 5 or even 10 cents in advance of the cold spell depending on the confidence level of the meteorological forecasts and whether it seemed to traders that it would be a “sure thing” or not. Perhaps, the cold air does rush into the citrus region as forecast, but maybe cloud cover kept ground temperatures warmer than expected or winds kept the cold air from penetrating the groves and freeze damage was averted. Chances are then that not only did the crop escape losses but the cold spell was probably beneficial for the crop as the chillier temperatures helped to promote color of the maturing fruit. A potentially bullish event became bearish.
