July Corn Sees Hefty Profit-Taking, But No Chart Damage

Corn futures for July delivery at the Chicago Board of Trade on Tuesday morning were trading locked down the permissible daily trading limit of 30 cents a bushel, at $7.52 1/2. Price action is seeing a corrective, profit-taking pullback from recent strong gains that saw July futures on Friday score a new all-time record high of $7.99 3/4.

No serious near-term technical damage has occurred in July corn futures with Tuesday's solid selling pressure. Prices remain in a 12-month-old longer-term uptrend on the daily bar chart. It would take a push in prices below the last "reaction low" on the daily bar chart, presently located at the June low of $7.29 1/4, to at least temporarily negate the aforementioned price uptrend and produce some significant near-term technical damage. And it would take multiple closes below major psychological support at $7.00 a bushel in July corn futures to produce more serious near-term chart damage to then suggest a major market top is in place.

For the bulls to regain the strong upside near-term technical momentum they enjoyed just recently, they would need to produce a close above major psychological resistance at $8.00 a bushel. Near-term technical resistance for July corn is located at $7.60, $7.65, $7.70 and then at the May high of $7.75. Chart support is located at $7.50, $7.45, $7.40, $7.36 and then at $7.29 1/4. Stay tuned!--Jim Wyckoff
