The "Long Option" Option

by Cannon Trading staff

Futures traders are truly a diverse group. A clear picture of the diversity within the human species. Tall, short, thin, fat, handsome, not, liberal, not, educated, not, spiritual, not...you get the picture. Some traders can only trade from a long term perspective. Others shake uncontrollably at the thought of holding a position while sleeping.

The majority of you receiving this market letter are short term traders or day traders. Electronic trading platforms with their speed of execution have changed the trading landscape. We at Cannon Trading have worked hard to provide our daytrading clients with state-of-the-art trading platforms and information sources. We do this very well. It is, however, not the total picture of the opportunities that we bring to the table for our clients.

Major market moves produce either mega profits or losses. These longer term moves are difficult to capture when holding a futures contract position. The intraday swings often make holding these positions seemingly impossible. The solution...DO NOT trade futures. WHAT!!! A broker saying not to trade? YES...not to trade futures contracts. This is a time when buying put or call options is most appropriate.

For trading purposes, short term trading purposes, I have several issues with options on futures. Or, options on stocks for that matter. But, for longer term, major move, wealth-building ideas, long put and call options are ideal. No margin calls, no worries about stop placement, no intra day fakeouts. Options that have been bought are much easier to manage than are futures positions. This is why all traders of every time frame should consider option positions for large moves based on economic fundamentals.

To a technical trader, one who uses charts and mathematical equations for making trading decisions, "fundamentals" is a four letter word. However, it is undeniable that economic news, political policies, and psychology drive price movement. Capturing two or three major moves in a year can significantly enhance your short term trading results. Participating in a $3 move in the beans or a $200 move in gold, using options can be very rewarding (with a more-defined risk when losses occur). If you have not traded options, or even if you have, talk to your Cannon Trading broker about current conditions for an option trade or strategy in the stock markets, currencies, or metals. Bonds may be an exciting market for a put position or a bear spread strategy. The grains usually attempt a rally in the spring as planting and crop condition concerns develop. Call spreads can produce major profits with limited risk. Talk to your broker. Explore these and other ideas with him. Use the option option in your trading this year.
