October 2008 Futures Forecast: Eye of the Hurricane (The Hunt for Black October)

The financial earthquakes of the last month dominated headlines, led to the near collapse of global credit markets and transformed Wall Street. In the end, a panicked US Congress was forced to consider (and initially reject) an extraordinary $700B bailout package designed to forestall what many feared would be a new Great Depression. Over the course of a few weeks, several pillars of the financial world collapsed or came close to collapse, including Lehman Brothers, AIG and Washington Mutual. Merrill Lynch sold itself to Bank of America, and the era of independent investment banking came to an end as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs converted their charters to federal bank holding companies. Several money market funds came close to "breaking the buck." The threat of subprime mortgages further poisoning markets forced the Treasury to nationalize mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And all this took place mere weeks before a hotly contested Presidential election. Needless to say, the weight of this dramatic news means that any sort of October surprise could shake already frail markets to the core. Events to watch include central bank rate decisions, key GDP data, a looming employment report, earnings season and the final stretch of the Presidential contest.
