May Forecast: Uncharted Territory

April saw some markets soar into uncharted territory, erasing the memory of the February correction. Equity indices have shaken off jitters about a US recession and subprime fallout, sending the DJIA to a record high, breaking 13,000, and the Chinese stock market is still going gangbusters. Commodity prices remain elevated as the global economy remains robust, even as the US dollar slipped to an all time low against the Euro (and a 25 year low against the Pound Sterling), reflecting the slowdown in the States. A plethora of potentially market moving events are in store for May, including economic data, geopolitical events, and central bank maneuvers.

Energy

Crude oil futures have remained in a range of $61 to $67 per barrel for the last month, held aloft by continued geopolitical concerns, some unexpected refinery outages, and continued OPEC compliance with cutback goals. Gasoline futures...
